Short Vowels: Short vowel sounds occur when a vowel is followed by a consonant and the vowel does not say its name. 

  1. Short ‘a’: /æ/ as in cat, bat, hat
  2. Short ‘e’: /ɛ/ as in bed, red, pen
  3. Short ‘i’: /ɪ/ as in sit, hit, pin
  4. Short ‘o’: /ɒ/ or /ɑ/ as in pot, not, top

Long Vowels: Long vowel sounds occur when the vowel says its name. 

  1. Long ‘a’: /eɪ/ as in cake, game, name (silent ‘e’) or rain, pain (vowel pair)
  2. Long ‘e’: /iː/ as in see, tree, be (open syllable) or feet, meet (vowel pair)
  3. Long ‘i’: /aɪ/ as in kite, time, line (silent ‘e’) or pie, tie (vowel pair)
  4. Long ‘o’: /oʊ/ as in bone, home, note (silent ‘e’) or boat, coat (vowel pair)
  5. Long ‘u’: /juː/ or /uː/ as in cube, mule, flute (silent ‘e’) or blue, true (vowel pair)
