Rhyming is the repetition of same or similar sounds, normally at the end of words. Understanding rhyming is essential skill for early learners and also is a important aspect of phonological awareness. Rhyming helps children recognize sound patterns in words, making it easier to predict, decode, and spell new words. It also enhances memory, vocabulary, and creative thinking. Our free preschool rhyming worksheets and flashcards helps children to play with words and sounds.

Types of Rhymes:

  1. Perfect Rhyme: The ending sounds of words are exactly the same.
    • Examples: cat/hat, tree/bee, light/night.
  2. Near Rhyme: The ending sounds are similar but not identical.
    • Examples: worm/swarm, bridge/grudge, young/song.
  3. Eye Rhyme: Words look like they should rhyme because of their spelling but do not sound the same.
    • Examples: love/move, cough/bough, food/good.
