Syllables is a unit of pronunciation which contains one vowel sound and usually will have one or more consonants. Types of Syllables:
- Closed Syllables:
- Ends in a consonant.
- The vowel sound is short.
- Examples: cat, dog, sit, bat, pen.
- Open Syllables:
- Ends in a vowel.
- The vowel sound is long.
- Examples: he, go, me, no, she.
- Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) Syllables:
- Contains a vowel followed by a consonant and a silent ‘e’ at the end.
- The first vowel is long.
- Examples: cake, bike, name, home, hope.
- Vowel Team Syllables:
- Contains two vowels which together make one sound.
- Examples: boat, rain, team, read, coat.
- R-Controlled Syllables:
- Contains a vowel followed by the letter ‘r’ which changes vowel sound.
- Examples: car, bird, star, fern, hurt.
- Consonant-le Syllables:
- Occurs at the end of words.
- Contains a consonant followed by ‘le.’
- Examples: table, apple, little, bottle, candle.
- Diphthong Syllables:
- Contains a complex vowel sound formed by the combination of two vowels in the same syllable.
- Examples: boy, cow, oil, loud, coin.
